Sashiko & Boro

This subscription-based, mentored studio workshop explores the rich history and contemporary practice of Sashiko and Boro stitching—traditional Japanese techniques rooted in repair, reuse, and beauty through utility. Boro began as a practical method of mending worn garments with layered fabric and informal stitching, while Sashiko evolved those same techniques into more decorative, patterned forms. Today, both are celebrated not only for their history, but for their relevance in sustainable fashion and modern textile design.

In this workshop, students will learn foundational Sashiko stitching, explore Boro aesthetics, and work at their own pace with guided instruction. You’ll have access to Sashiko stencils (from simple to complex), reference books, samples, and tools to support learning and experimentation. One session will focus on creating a small Boro “inspiration book”, giving you a tactile reference for future projects. For those enrolled in the full subscription format, a bonus session introduces small-batch botanical dyeing of Sashiko thread, allowing you to build a custom color palette for your stitching practice.

Space is limited. Use website contact form to message Kipp to discuss availability and scheduling.

Why This Is Different from a Typical Class

This is not a single-project workshop or a fixed weekly class. It’s a guided studio practice designed for artists and makers who want time to learn, reflect, and develop their skills with intention. The subscription format allows flexibility while maintaining commitment and continuity—key elements for meaningful handwork.

Rather than rushing toward a finished product, this workshop emphasizes process, repetition, and personal direction, with mentorship tailored to your goals.
